What Is a Bed Bug Mattress Encasement?
If you are worried about bed bugs, your first instinct may be to throw your bed out but this can be a costly solution and may not even solve the problem. Instead, why not purchase a bed bug proof, mattress encasement, that will cover your mattress with a super smooth surface, preventing bed bugs from getting in or out and starving them of blood in the long run.
How Do Bedbug-Proof Mattress Encasements Work?
A bed bug mattress encasement cover can be used as a preventative measure before an infestation ever begins. Once placed over the mattress and box springs it creates a silky-smooth surface that the bugs are unable to penetrate through. This makes them easy to spot on the outer layer of the sheet.
If you are unfortunate enough to have already spied these blood-sucking bugs, chances are they are living right underneath where you lay. Eliminating them is virtually impossible through any other means as once spotted they tend to migrate to other areas of the bed. Encasements are highly effective as they trap the bed bugs inside, preventing them from moving elsewhere. When left on, it is easy to spy lone stragglers on top of the mattress sheet, which can be more efficiently dealt with.
There is also another added bonus to including a mattress encasement on your bed. Not only does it stop bed bugs from biting, but it guards against spillages and allergens, which ultimately prolongs the life of the mattress itself.
I would, however, always recommend using mattress encasement covers in conjunction with other forms of pest control to ensure that you have fully solved the situation.
How Should You Select a Bed Bug Mattress Encasement?
When selecting a mattress encasement, in addition to being bite-proof, you want to consider the following factors: –
- Bed bug protection level: I have had experiences of purchasing a mattress encasement and finding that the bed bugs were able to wriggle their way through the zip mechanism. Make sure the teeth on the zipper are small so that even the tiniest of bed bug nymph is unable to clamber through. The zip should then be encased itself. Check the zip can lock and can't move around and always check for rips, tears, pockets, and folds. Bed bugs are like mini Houdini's and can magic their way out of any entrapment given the smallest of chance.
- Dust mite protection level: One of the most common household allergens is the Dust Mite. Whilst there are many ways to tackle them, a mattress encasement that covers the entire bed is a fantastic solution. So, make sure you choose an encasement with high protection levels and you may just find that you kill 2 bugs with one sheet!
- Noise: Due to the material these sheets are made of, they do tend to create noise as you move around. One way around this is to place a padded mattress cover on top of it, adding an additional layer between you and the bugs, and drowning out any likely sounds made from the sheet.
- Does it need to be waterproof? Your mattress encasement needs to be waterproof to protect against any soiling or spillages. The last thing you want to have to do is to change your bed bug encasement after it has been sealed on the mattress.
- Do you need bed bug pillow encasements too? Yes. Bed bugs are infamously difficult to get rid of and even if you have sealed off the mattress, chances are there are others lurking elsewhere. For this reason, it is important to encase not only the mattress but the pillows too.

How to Detect and Treat Bed Bugs
If you suspect you have bought hitchhikers into your house and are now sharing a mattress with bed bugs, then below I talk you through how to tackle them.
- Inspect your sleeping area: Move your bed as far away from the wall and any other furniture as possible. Wash all bedding on hot heat and vacuum the mattress as well as the floor. Make sure your sheets are not overhanging the bed and check regularly for bugs and eggs. Remember, they are difficult to dislodge and like to nestle into cracks and crevasses. A thorough investigation around your home should provide you with a conclusive insight as to whether you have bed bugs and where they might be lurking. Once located, resist the temptation to sleep elsewhere as you want to try and contain the infestation and be warned, where you go…they will follow!
- Use an interceptor: If you are struggling to locate the source, you could try placing interceptors on the feet of your bed. These are special cups that encourage bed bugs to venture in, but their shiny surfaces make it impossible for them to climb out.
- Use a steamer or vacuum: The best way to eradicate bed bugs is through either heat or steam as these extreme temperatures will not only kill the bed bugs on contact but will also destroy all eggs and larvae. Unfortunately, your average vacuum or clothes steamer will not suffice, and I would highly recommend that you do your research. I have written many blogs on the best bed bug steamers and cleaners, which you may find useful.
- Purchase a mattress cover: As detailed above, bed bugs love to hide in the wrinkles of your bedding and the mattress itself. By enclosing them in a bed bug encasement will stop them from getting to you and eventually starve them to death. But be aware that this will only work for the ones that are already in the mattress and not for those lurking elsewhere.
- Contact a pest control company: Bed bugs are incredibly difficult to get rid of and reproduce at a startling rate. If you are struggling to treat your property for bed bugs, then I would strongly advise that you call in a professional pest control company, before the situation gets out of control.
What Are the Dangers of Bed Bugs?
Unlike many other pests, bed bugs do not transmit diseases to humans upon contact. So, whilst it can be disturbing to find yourself sharing a bed with a bug, the most physical damage they can do is to cause skin irritations and allergies due to their incessant biting.
Most people will notice red lumps appearing all over their body, and experience relentless itching. It is the scratching itself, that can then cause further problems as infections may start to develop. Also detrimental to your health can be the sleep deprivation caused by itching and the constant worry about bed bugs.
What to Do if Your Mattress Is Already Infested With Bed Bugs?
If your mattress is already infested with bed bugs, then simply replacing it will not solve the issue as these pests are likely to still be present in the structure of the bed or in surrounding furniture. Therefore, I would recommend that you start treating the room immediately as mentioned above.
How Long Do You Need to Keep a Mattress Encasement On?
A bed bug can live for over a year, so you need to keep your mattress encasement on for at least 18 months. That said, I prefer to leave them on for the duration of the mattress's life. Even when you purchase a new bed, you should ensure that the mattress cover remains on and is clearly labeled for disposal.
Mattress Covers vs Mattress Encasements – What’s the Difference?
Due to the open style bottom of a mattress cover, they are easy to remove and wash regularly but will not protect you against bed bugs. A mattress encasement, however, tends to be zippered on all sides with sealed Velcro enclosures to offer full protection against not only fluids and bacteria but the dreaded bed bug. They are easy to install and are perfect for combating bugs.
Conclusion
A bed bug, like all pests, will choose its home close to its food supply. Instead of cheese or water, however, a bed bug's food supply is you! Therefore, where you go, they go – even if it means crawling through walls.
It is simply not enough to clean and wash your bedding regularly in the hope of not catching or banishing bed bugs. A proper pest control system needs to be in place, starting with a mattress encasement. I recommend these to everyone, whether they have spotted a bug or not, as it not only protects you against biting but prolongs the life of your mattress too.
What you pay for is generally what you get in terms of quality, so it is definitely worth purchasing one of my recommended bed bug mattress encasements, rather than buying cheap off the shelf.
If you find that you are still getting bitten having applied the encasement, then I suggest you use insecticides or call in a pest control expert to eject them for good.
